Motivated by the urgent need to address microplastic pollution in our oceans—sparked by my first encounter with a dolphin, tragically lifeless and filled with plastics—I set out to inspire my team to develop a nature-inspired solution. By studying how fish filter particles from water, we aimed to mimic this natural process to contribute to a cleaner and healthier environment.
Using Arduino technology and 3D printing, we created a biomimicry-inspired fish capable of capturing microplastics. The design emphasized simplicity and sustainability, incorporating an origami-inspired structure to minimize material use while maximizing efficiency. This project reflected the intersection of technology, innovation, and environmental responsibility.
I had the opportunity to present our project to an audience of 100 people and a panel of judges, including an MIT graduate and a representative from LINE Corporation. Our pitch earned Runner-Up Innovation Award at the Southeast Asia Demo Day, showcasing the potential of combining creativity, technological ingenuity, and environmental advocacy to drive meaningful change.
